Bowls England FAQ’s

Understandably, Bowls England has been inundated with enquiries from clubs and county associations regarding the Coronavirus outbreak.

They have produced a ‘FAQ’ document in response to the first wave of enquiries, which have been similar in their nature. It will continue to be updated as we deal with this ever‐changing situation.

BOWLS ENGLAND – CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK

BOWLS ENGLAND SETS OUT PLANS FOR 2020 SEASON IN RESPONSE TO CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK

Bowls England has announced the cancellation of all its domestic events ahead of the 2020 lawn bowls season in response to the latest Government advice and growing concerns from bowlers about how the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak will impact lawn bowls.

The decision, which was reached at an Emergency Meeting of Board members and key staff, held on Tuesday 17th March, covers all National Championships, National Competitions and other domestic events. Discussions are ongoing with the British Isles Bowls Council and British Isles Women’s Bowls Council with regard to British Isles events this year.

Bowls England will be providing support and advice to clubs and county associations over the coming weeks to ensure the future of the sport – including plans for a proposed ‘Festival of Bowls’ later in the season.

Tony Allcock OBE, Bowls England Chief Executive, said: “Every organisation is currently coming to terms with a global situation that is unprecedented, to which Bowls England is sadly not immune. The National Finals are the conclusion of a long process that starts each year in May, therefore it is not possible for the qualification process to be completed in time throughout our 35 county associations.

“However, bowlers are known to be resilient and have proven in the past that they join together and support each other in the time of need. Now, more than ever, is the time for us all to work together to ensure that our clubs and bowling greens are available when it is deemed safe to resume our much-loved sport. So we would urge our members to commit to their clubs, keep an eye out for their fellow members who may feel isolated and be ready to get back on the greens when Government guidance allows.

“Finally, I wish to thank my staff team for their support at this time in managing this ever-changing situation. We have been inundated with enquiries from our clubs and county associations, and we will ensure that each and every enquiry is responded to in the coming days. However, our priority in the next two days will be ensuring that our staff are able to work from home effectively from next Monday”

The Board agreed that one of the most important areas of work for Bowls England over the coming weeks will be club support. Bowls England plans to provide advice and support on subjects including:

a. Coronavirus Guidance
b. Minimum amount of Greens Maintenance required so greens are playable when we resume bowling
c. Funding (including Club Loans and encouraging bowlers to support their clubs financially by continuing to pay their annual subscriptions – so clubs will still be there for them when we resume bowling)
d. Recruitment
e. Looking after each other (including encouraging members to keep an eye out for each other, especially fellow bowlers who may live on their own)
f. Staying Fit (including producing a ‘Bowlers’ Workout’ in order to keep members active during isolation or working from home)

Other key decisions taken by the Board were:

1. Bowls England office to close with effect from Friday 20th March and all staff (including Coach Bowls employees) to work from home with effect from Monday 23rd March – support for Clubs and County Associations will continue as normal.
2. Work on the new Bowls England Head Office is put ‘on hold’ until further notice
3. In support of Clubs at this difficult time, Bowls England will refund the Affiliation Fees paid for 2020 by each playing member. Bowls England will arrange refunds to the county associations, who are mandated to ensure that all monies are then paid to their Member Clubs.
4. Board to meet regularly via Skype/Conference Call to monitor the ever-changing situation, review the impact on bowls and plan accordingly – regular updates will be issued.

Christmas Quiz Night

The fun quiz night took place on Friday 13th, with some good guesses and a bit of knowledge helping team JTC to a narrow win by half a point, closely followed by the Tiger & Tigeresses and Jingle Bells. The mulled wine and mince pies helped everyone get into the festive mood and warmed against the wintry weather.

Look out for our next social event in January, more details to follow.

We wish all our members a safe and happy Christmas and New Year.

Press Release

Two Bowls legends come to Daventry!!

Bowls is Bowls, the organisation established to encourage all bowls organisations
and bowlers of all ages, creeds, colour and abilities to work together, is delighted to
announce that as part of its week-long initiative to promote the sport, Scottish
bowling world-record breaking legend, Alex ‘Tattie’ Marshall MBE will be appearing
at Daventry Indoor Bowls Club (IBC) on 12 th September, between 11.30-1.30pm,
alongside another legendary medal-winning member of England’s Commonwealth
Games bowls team, David Bolt ‘Bolty’.

The two icons of the game will appear at the venue alongside Daventry IBC
President, Sue Pernyes, where they will not only play some fine exhibition bowls, but
also provide invaluable coaching advice to those players and audience members
present, and afterwards hold an informal Q&A session.

The 12 th September ‘Bowls is Bowls’ day will aim to provide a clear emphasis on the
organisations intention to bring all forms of Bowls at all levels and platforms
together to help promote the sport, whilst demonstrating the openness and limitless
opportunities for the sport to reach out into communities, via hospitals, care home
facilities, youth clubs and other related areas. The possibilities are endless!
During the day, both David and Alex will pay a visit to Daventry Town Bowls Club,
where they will meet Duggie Mitchel Chairman & Director of Disability Bowls
England and take part in a ‘Triathlon of bowls’.

The culmination of the day will involve a visit to Daventry Town Football Club, where
as part of an initiative to also promote football, ‘Bolty’, being an avid supporter and
follower of his beloved Sunderland AFC, will meet with players and Daventry Town
Manager, Arron Parkinson and have chance to demonstrate his footballing prowess.
There will also be a Football v Bowls challenge, ‘How far can your ball go’, which will
involve participants from both sports seeing how far their respective balls can travel.
Councillor Alan Hills, Community, Culture and Leisure Portfolio Holder at Daventry
District Council said: “It’s great to see our local clubs working together to promote
sporting activity in Daventry District. As a District council we support all kinds of
sports and I would encourage people to come along to these open events and find
out more about how to get involved in bowls.”

A live music performance from the Rock n Roll Bowler, Max Milner, followed by a
disco hosted by Robert Palser of World Series Bowls fame will close the days
proceedings.

David Bolt ‘Bolty’ needs no introduction to players and fans alike, winning a Bronze
medal as part of the lawn bowls men's fours on the Gold Coast, whilst Alex ‘Tattie’
Marshall MBE is a World champion record-breaking Scottish Bowls player.
Alex ‘Tattie’ Mitchell was awarded an MBE in the 2007 New Year Honours List for his
services to the sport, having started his bowling career at the age of eight supported
by both his father and grandfather, going on to represent his country in 1988. Alex is
a record breaking six-time World Indoor Singles Champion, with six World Indoor
Pairs titles to his credit (four Men's Pairs & two Mixed Pairs), plus six World Outdoor
Championship Gold medals (Pairs in 1992, 2000 and 2012, Fours in 1992, and Team
in 1992, 1996 & 2004).

His other achievements include five Commonwealth Games Gold medals (Pairs in
2002, 2006, 2014, & Fours in 2014, 2018), one Atlantic Games Team Gold (in 2015),
and three Hong Kong International Classic Pairs titles (in 1993, 1996, 2002).
Commenting on Alex’s appearance at the Bowls is Bowls day, ‘Bolty’ said, “To have a
player of his (Alex) distinction visit any club is fantastic and I see this as an amazing
opportunity for not only Daventry IBC but the game of Bowls to promote itself far
and wide due to Alex’s stature.”

Bowls is Bowls is the brainchild of Boul Traders Chief Executive, Mark Courtney,

It was the first match of season and six ladies and their supporters set off fo play against the ladies of Whyte Melville Club. It was just the weather for an evening Bowls match, the green bowled true to its reputation – fast!  Although the Daventry Ladies took a heavy defeat, we all came off the green smiling having enjoyed our experience at Whyte Mellville.  Captain Margaret Daynes thanked the team for their valiant effort.
We look forward to the forthcoming games, next game is against Woodford Halse at the Tigers on 7th June at 6.30 pm.

Daventry Town v Byfield

May 11th
On a bright and sunny afternoon Daventry Town entertained Byfield to a game of four triple rinks. Early in the season the green played very well and a very enjoyable game ended with the closest of scores.  Each side won two rinks, but thanks to  their highest winning rink of Richard Taylor, John Moore and skip John Hodgkinson, Daventry won by one point 62-61.

Afterwards both sides enjoyed tea and biscuits, and a little alcohol in the clubhouse!
